History Repeats Itself

One of my favorite quotes is by Blackie Sherrod, “History must repeat itself because we pay such little attention to it the first time.”

For me that quote just sums up the world’s problems. So many humans make the same mistakes over and seem to be unconscious of their circle of errors.

Why is it that some people do indeed keep repeating their negative history?

  1. TV I am always amazed at how well you can say so very much in one paragraph. I am not sure if I am wording that right, but it is a huge compliment! You are right, I think people in general repeat things over and over until they actually have the strong will to create a positive change. It takes a lot of want and work to change. I hope you are well my friend. Poor Little Chick is really not feeling well and it makes me so sad. Have a good night!

  2. I've heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. We keep repeating history or "doing the same thing" because it is what we know and familiar is always easier to deal with than the unknown. Think of a victim of abuse. I can only imagine how they must loathe how they felt at the hand of their abuser; yet they turn around and abuse others because it is a cycle, and it is what they know. Like Mama Hen said, change takes a lot of want and a lot of work. Bottom line, it's not the easy way out!

  3. This is so true. I know as I mother I want to prevent my children from making the same mistakes I made in the past. But how to do so without pushing them to rebellion? They're still young, but I still prepare. Excellent post- you really have me thinking!

  4. what a post that gets your brain stirring! I think MOST people tend to repeat that cycle because they don't know any different. Its hard to "Picture" the other outcome when all they see is the negative behavior being modeled. I think they might also be afraid of change and sometimes its just "easier" to stay. Unfortunate but true. I know as a wife and mother, I only want POSITIVE things for my children and husband, taking only the positive direction, so I guess being a positive model and showing them the "right" way is best. If we even know the "right" way ourselves?? Great post!

  5. Great question. I think the answer lies in the fact that often we can't see past the end of our nose. We are so egocentric by nature that to imagine a future that does not repeat the past, and then actually GO AFTER IT, requires a certain amount of looking beyond yourself. And for some people, particularly those who have not had that modeled for them, it's simply impossible.

  7. This is so true! I try to make sure that when I make a mistake I take time to figure out what was wrong with the choice I made so that I can learn from the situation. I think that sometimes people in this world are too lazy to look within or are too quick to blame others first for their mistakes and then they don't learn from them. I love the quote I may have to use that one for my sunday Citar.
