Do You Negotiate?

I used to be too embarrassed to negotiate prices of merchandise or services.  My husband is a tough negotiator and so I slowly started to see the benefit of asking for a better deal (slow learner).  While there are many of you who may be much much more advanced in the negotiation department, here are two negotiating skills that help me:

  • Simply ask for a better deal.  It doesn’t hurt to ask.
  • After you ask for a better deal, be silent.  Don’t be the first to talk.  Let them ponder the next move.

What are your tips on negotiating?

  1. Great negotiating tips for someone who used to be embarrassed to do it! I'm with you on that one. What I've seen others do is leave (if they can part with not buying it) or point out another store's better price. Have a great Friday!

  2. I leave it for my hubby. He will negotiate for anything. My mom told me she asks for a % off when she shops a any department store, and usually it works.

  3. Ha, my hubby won't do this but I totally will!!! You'd be surprised at how many prices are NOT final!!!

  4. I'm like you (as you may already know), too embarrassed to negotiate. When I do ask for a different price and they lower it once but not quite where I want it to be still, that's the problem. I wouldn't know how to ask for more. Any tips? What do you do at that point? (other than let the hubby negotiate?) :-)

  5. I do not always negotiate. I used to leave it to my Dad and now to my hubby. But when I lived in Mexico I got pretty good at it! Have a great weekend TV!

  6. I stink at negotiating. I always feel like it's unfair to the seller that I ask for a better price--especially if they made the item with their own hands! I also think of these hard economic times and how everyone is struggling to make a buck. I'm sorry I can't offer any advice here. I do, however, like to make "bids" on eBay!

  7. I am horrible at this. I am always thinking of the other guy "this is his job. He needs to earn money" etc...instead of looking out for our pocketbook. Good thing my hubby rocks at this...I just let him handle this kind of stuff!

  8. Ahh this is a tough one! It is going to take me a long time to start asking for better deals, I think. BUt I need to start trying at the very least, right? Right.

  9. I'm still learning how to do this b/c I feeling uncomfortable when I start negotiating. My husband is a master at this though! I guess it's just keeping in mind is the worst they can do is say no.

  10. My mom taught me to haggle for everything. On the flip side, I hate when potential clients won't negotiate with me and I end up losing business because they were afraid to ask for a discount on my prices. (I'm an admissions coach and tutor.) I once chased down a client and got them to haggle with me lol.
